Valtrex is used nowadays for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles), suppression of genital herpes in immunocompetent individuals and also of recurrent genital herpes in HIV-infected individuals. Besides it is also applied for healing cold sores. Available in the form of valtrex pills and valtrex tablets is taken orally. In general, it is prescribed to take every 8 hours (three times a day) for 7 days to treat shingles. But for treating genital herpes it is usually taken twice a day for 5 days and for cold sores is taken for one day only. Now if you miss any, take it s soon as you remember. But if it is near the time of the next dose skip it but never break the discipline. But be cautious to use this medication as soon as possible after symptoms appear. Even if you feel better continue with medication, unless advised by the doctor. Besides, if you do suffer from allergic to acyclovir (Zovirax) contact the doctor. Moreover, if you do suffer from kidney disease or immune system problems honestly tell the doctor. In that case, you my need to have a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment with Valtrex. Again, if you are pregnant during treatment do not have this medication without talking with the doctor. However, it is not known whether valtrex passes into breast milk and affects the newborn baby. Therefore, do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Valtrex side effects are also quite common. They include nervous system problems like aggressive behavior, unsteady movement, shaky movements, confusion, speech problems, hallucinations, seizures, and coma. Again, kidney failures have occurred in patients suffering from kidney diseases and elderly patients whose kidneys do not work well due to age. Therefore, tell the doctor if you have kidney problems before taking valtrex. Again, valtrex will not prevent the spread of genital herpes. Avoidance of sexual intercourse and use of latex condoms may prevent spreading the virus to others.
